A Nuts and Bolts Operation
Watching Don smile as he address the needs of the two callers on the line and the two guys standing before his desk, you would never guess that he enjoys weekend gigs as a bassist in his Thin Lizzy-inspired band.
Back in the Air Force, he'd been trained in the repair of aircraft, eventually becoming a one-man parts specialist, including auto and construction machine parts as well as service solutions. Like many employees, his interest in fixing machines brought him to United Rentals, first approaching as a vendor (a nut and bolt distributor for maintenance and supply). His good-natured approach helped him develop a great rapport with customers – and with United Rentals management, who brought him on board by essentially creating a post tailored to Don's unique talents and customer base.
Don expresses much enthusiasm for United Rentals as a workplace. "Everything else is a job. United Rentals is a career," he says, reaching for the ringing phone. As he keys in an order for a part in the i-Gel, he adds, "My favorite part of the day is the end of the day; not because the day is over, but to look back and see what I've accomplished."
