Excavation Safety for Competent Persons

Offered at more than 50 United Rentals Trench Safety branches and now available online, our 'Excavation Awareness Training for Competent Persons' course is designed and conducted by professional trainers in compliance with federal requirements. In-classroom training is held on the first Friday of every month.

The expanded training platform gives United Rentals customers broader access to Excavation Competent Person instruction that satisfies OSHA requirements. Standard Subpart P references proper soil test procedures and different types of protective systems and provides guidance on how to take control of hazardous conditions. In the United States, OSHA mandates that every excavation project have a trained "competent person" on-site to oversee safe work practices.

Topics Covered During Training Include:

  • OSHA expectations of a Competent Person on site
  • OSHA regulations for various types of trench safety equipment
  • Proper procedures for visual and manual soil tests
  • Identification and control of hazardous conditions
  • Proper safety procedures for work near underground utilities
